Natures Deepest
Nature’s deepest diamonds are some of the most fascinating and rare gemstones found deep within the Earth. These diamonds form under extreme conditions, at depths of around 150 to 200 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface, in the mantle — the thick layer of the Earth between the crust and the core. The conditions there involve incredibly high pressure (over 4.5 gigapascals) and temperatures that range from 900 to 1,300 degrees Celsius. What makes these diamonds particularly unique is that they are often older than most other diamonds, some even dating back more than 3 billion years. They are formed from carbon that gets trapped deep within the Earth when tectonic plates subduct, or when the Earth's mantle undergoes geological processes like melting and mixing. These deep diamonds come in several different types, with the most notable being Type IIa diamonds. These diamonds are almost completely pure, free from nitrogen impurities that are common in diamonds formed at shallower depths. Type IIa diamonds are highly prized for their clarity and exceptional brilliance. Some diamonds that have traveled to the surface have also brought with them fascinating inclusions, such as minerals that form only at extreme depths, like peridotite or eclogite, which offer scientists valuable insights into the conditions and composition of the Earth's deep interior. In addition to being scientifically significant, some of these diamonds have been discovered in "diamond mines" like the famous Jwaneng mine in Botswana, which is known for producing some of the world's rarest and deepest diamonds. What’s even more interesting is that there are also ultradeep diamonds that form at depths greater than 700 kilometers. These are incredibly rare and have recently been the subject of scientific research because they may contain information about the Earth's mantle's chemistry and even the processes that drive plate tectonics. In short, Nature’s deepest diamonds are not just beautiful gemstones; they are windows into the Earth's mysterious and dynamic inner world.
